What happens in a lesson?

The Alexander Technique is generally taught one to one. With the subtle use of hands and verbal explanation a teacher will help a pupilLesson Picture with patterns of tension that affect movement and poise. We work with everyday activities such as sitting, walking and getting in and out of a chair.  It is not only the movement itself that we look at, but also the anticipation before the movement. When a client has developed a greater awareness of this we may look at more specialised activities. There are no “Alexander exercises” as such, only the practice of lying down with your head on some books which most clients find very enjoyable.

The best way to find out more is to come for an introductory lesson.

How many lessons are needed?

I like to see people for about 6 weekly sessions when they begin Alexander lessons and then discuss with the client the most effective way forwards.  After a few lessons more specialised activities can be looked at.  This may include bending and lifting, sport, working out, performance and voice work.
